Neighborhoods should prepare for emergencies and disaster situations. Preparation saves lives, reduces the severity of injuries and trauma, and reduces property damage. Preparing as a neighborhood develops stronger communities and improves the quality of life for all.
Key Considerations
The State of Washington Department of Emergency Management is preparing a new neighborhood program for release in Fall 2021. Check back for updated information or email KCDEM.
KCDEM recommends the following:
- Identify the skills and equipment each neighbor has that would be useful in an effective disaster response.
- Know which neighbors have supplies and skills. This helps your disaster response, and allows everyone to contribute.
- Create a neighborhood map of natural gas and propane tanks locations.
- Create a contact list that identifies those with access and functional needs. This could be the elderly, disabled, or children who may be home alone during certain hours of the day.
- Work with neighbors as a team to check your neighborhood after a disaster and take necessary actions.
